iTunes Review

Six years after the release of her debut album, Butterfly Boucher returns with an altogether satisfying follow-up, 2009’s Scary Fragile where the Australian-born singer/songwriter again shows her fluent touch as a composer and multi-instrumentalist. Boucher excels at grabbing the listener from the first note and the choppy guitar attack of “I Found Out” and growling bass thrust of “Keeper” are examples of her sure instinct for hooks. Tracks like “For the Love of Love,” “Bright Red” and “Keeping Warm” are intricate pop creations that manage to stay uncluttered amidst their shifting rhythms and spiky dynamics. The emotional range of the album is impressive, stretching from the confrontational angst of “Just One Tear” to the nervous hope of “You Say You Grow” and the subdued melancholy of “A Bitter Song.” Two tracks demand special notice: the ominous, self-revealing title tune and the slinky, soulful “Gun for a Tongue.” More than boasting a bright, infectious sound, Scary Fragile has real substance and heart in its grooves.

The Stunna from Down Unda

There's something misguided and careless about labeling this album Pop and leaving it at that. One has to reinvent genres for artists like Butterfly who compose, write, and play (by themselves) a large portion of the instrumentental tracks on their albums. There are certainly some pop-ish overtones on Scary Fragile, but any girl who wields a Gibson Thunderbird bass in concert one minute and a Telecaster the next is a rock star in my eyes, and Butterfly in particular is something along the lines of Art Rock. It'll catch on...

With thinking person lyrics that are at once tangible and relatable Butterfly has accomplished, again, what some artists never quite reach--an album that connects, really truly connects to a listener. There are rockers worthy of blaring out an open car window ("I Found Out," "Keeper"), head boppers ("For The Love of Love," "Gun For a Tongue," "To Feel Love"), and a couple that will break your heart ("Scary Fragile," "A Bitter Song"). Perhaps I'm just a sucker for a sad song, but it is the album's title track that serves as its crowning achievement. I heard a live version of "Scary Fragile" barely a month ago and at 25 it struck such a pained chord with me that I sat absolutely motionless apart from the tears that had involuntarily sprung to my eyes. I can count on one hand and a couple of fingers how many times a song has done that to me upon first listen.

Don't let this album flutter by you.

BB rocks

Being long awaited, the new album is fulfilling the high expectations. I already listened to the previews on KGRL.fm since a while and was looking forward to the release date excitedly. My album highlight is definitely 'For the Love of Love', but at last did none of the tracks disappoint.

The Long Overdue Return of Butterfly

I first caught Butterfly Boucher when she opened for Sarah McLachlan way back in 2004. I usually zone out during opening acts (especially when I'm really excited for the headliner) but Butterfly blew me away with her stage presence, her musicianship, her songs, and her red shoes. I immediately bought "Flutterby" and it hasn't left my rotation since then. I have been chomping at the bit for the second release, listening to the infamous "Whoops Day" releases at her Myspace page. "Scary Fragile" is more of what makes me love Butterfly. Her music is upbeat (for the most part) and still has all the quirky ingredients that make it a Butterfly Boucher CD. What can I say? The girl is pure gold and the record execs need to pull their heads out of their you know whats. This CD is solid. No sophomore slump here. Well worth the wait. Standouts "For the Love of Love", "Gun for a Tongue", "Bright Red", and "Keeper" keep me coming back for repeated plays. "Keeper" should be the next Bond Theme! Anways, I will always gush about Butterfly Boucher and beat my friends over the head with her records! My only complaint is that she isn't touring in Michigan any time soon :-(

Biography

Born: Australia

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Born into the middle of a seven-daughter family with creative and free-spirited parents, Butterfly Boucher's first name was suggested by some divine intervention her mother was experiencing. A picture on an elementary school wall, a print on a dance teacher's leotard, and a 45 rpm single of "The Butterfly Song" (brought home by one of Mrs. Boucher's other daughters) all pointed to the name. Her father had pursued a professional career in music but when that failed, all their possessions were given...
